This is a close up of the young boy's face in THIS photo. His eyes look so sad.
There are approx 500 Civic Memorials memorials to the Great War in NZ - it had a big impact on New Zealand society. Ten percent of the then population of one million served overseas, of which more than 18,000 died and over 40,000 were wounded. Nearly every New Zealand family was affected.
