Percy Wiseman the Rhododendron lives at the bottom of my garden. He is very temperamental. Some years he blooms profusely, others not so well. The threat of a ride in a wheelbarrow usually sorts him out for the next season.

With your rhododendron, this is probably the opposite. The fear stimulates it to an exuberant bloom.
