Hope you don't mind another photo of Jeff (this is what he has been called) - I thought with the NZ Fur Seal in the foreground it was a good size comparison. He had likely travelled from Macquarie Island, halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica, where a large colony lives. It is 16 years since we last had a visit from one. Jeff trundled back into the sea about 9pm on Monday. Maybe he will return when fully grown. It was estimated he was about 1000kg. He could grow to 4000kg and will develop his proboscis, the long dangly bit on the nose that gives them their name.

This is an excellent comparison. I hope he has a safe journey. The narrative was excellent. tigs=^..^=

Jeff appears to have an open wound on his face. I hope he's okay and will be able to resume his journey.

John, it did not appear to be a wound, rather a discharge from his eye. However, his eyes looked bright and normal. He would have been inspected by one of the research and conservation scientists that work at the Blue Penguin colony right beside where Jeff came ashore.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Both a very interesting photograph and narrative, Lyn
Maybe Jeff had a brief vacation in New Zealand. If so he has a good taste. (The latter lines of my comment are just kidding!) I agree with Sandi that with this photograph you've offered us an excellent comparison.

The comparison in size is quite distinct - I do hope you get to see Jeff (or a relative) again sometime. You live in a fascinating part of the world Lyn!

Intriguing to have captured this scene, and the narrative gives us a better understanding of mother nature, excellent result.
