Sumpter Wharf, long time nesting home of numerous cormorants, basking in the late afternoon Autumn sunshine. The birds congregating at the far end will soon be joined by more returning home from their fishing. iPhone12 Edit: in response to comments the wharf has not been open to people since 2004. The Shags (cormorants) arrived and started nesting there 10 years later. The wharf has great historic value and it has been suggested it be repaired. Cost would be enormous and the birds would be displaced. Approximately half of the total population of Otago Shag species nest here .The subspecies has only recently been discovered. Spotted Shags also live there.

Lyn, looking closely at your photograph, I don't think this pier is safe enough for people to enter anymore. If so, it has become an ideal place for the cormorants to develop their activities. I've been told that these birds are excellent 'fishermen' and consuming a lot of fish every day. In my country, real fishermen have complained that the birds are preying on their fishing grounds extensively. In all honesty, I wonder whether they have the right to do that, 😁 .
Characterful photo anyway!

Edit: Lyn has added some information to her narratieve, confirming to me that the state of the wharf is very poor indeed. Thanks for the update Lyn!

I too wondered if people were still allowed on this - it's an excellent shot though!

I can see why it would take a lot to rebuild this. It's a terrific shot though.

I think I spotted all the varieties of Shags you mentioned in your narrative and wondered if the famous Shag of the seventies also nestled there, known for its deep pile texture, the infamous Shag Rug Shag?
