Portrait of a Kookaburra. For our American brethren it's pronounced with the "Kook" sounding like "cook" as in "chef" - not "kook" as in "loon". :) This fellow seemed pretty bold, Kookaburra's often are, landing on the grass so I got down on my belly and snaked my way closer and closer, he started looking at me like I might be edible, or certifiable and so I managed this portrait. Meanwhile the other campers in the park were all most amused to watch and comment on the weirdo crawling on his belly toward the Kookaburra. :)) Guess there aren't many photographers where they came from or they'd be used to such sights!

Enjoy.

PS Something about this reminded me of the Monty Python Lumberjack song, thus the title which can be sung to the same tune.

Mikel.

Crazy fun photo and back story. The Kookaburra is one of my favorites. What a treat to have them wandering around the park. I love hearing what people go through to get the shot. I like the details, his pose and expression. Now I am wondering what they look like in flight...

Well, I'll know them now when I run into one. lol That's really close. Your narrative describes your situation so well. I don't think you're a kook either for creeping up to him that way. lol

Beautiful colors on this bird and it actually posed for you. We used to sing a song about Kookaburras when I was a camper and then a counselor at Camp Whitewood in Orwell, Ohio, but we don't have the real actual birds in this country. They are delightful. Good focus.
