A Texas trail drive into Kansas was a serious operation. As many as 3000 cattle would comprise a drive into Kansas railheads some 1500 miles away from the start of a drive in Texas. The cowboys spent some 14-16 hrs a day in the saddle. They could move the cattle only some 10-12 miles a day. Their pay was about $30 a month. The clouds of dust raised by the cattle could be seen for miles and the sound of cattle hooves was heard for miles before they could be seen. This statue is called El Capitan. From every herd would emerge a leader. When a steer established itself as a good leader, drovers would keep the steer for use on later cattle drives. This statue is a tribute to those longhorn cattle leaders.

A four months cattle drive! You need a good "capitan" to guide the lot. Nice capture of this good looking steer.

See by its attitude that its was a real captain Momma. If I would have been a cattle in this time, I wouldn't have even in my mind to disobey his orders.
Very interesting post again Pat!

That's a very interesting story to go with your shot, Pat. The American cattle drives have been polished by Hollywood into myth & legend and the public has just eaten it up. When I was 2 or 3 years old, my father would bounce me on his knee while Frankie Laine sang the title song to the old TV series Rawhide. So, for better or worse, I'm a product of that mythology too. Thanks for the lesson.
