I had a lot of difficulties this year because the camera on my tripod would not hold my camera tightly, so I ended up holding it steady -- but I'm not that steady. I used varying lengths of exposure, usually in the 2 to 4 second range. I could then trigger the camera when I saw a launch and capture the burst. Of course, this also requires that you have the camera's focus fixed. There is nothing to focus on in the dark. I also use a low ISO, like 100, because the fireworks are bright and I want to get the colors without washout. I almost always use a wide angle and then crop in editing.

I had the focus off on this one, but it still looks nice and colorful.

Thanks for the info Jeff. Fireworks are difficult and you have given us a good starting point.

People are like cameras--sometimes they lose focus.

Its been a few years since I shot fireworks but if I remember I used a 50mm lens set to infinity manual focus F-4 and a cable release to open and close the shutter. I don't remember the turning out as good as yours.
