Jeff, like frogs, salamanders are declining in numbers and range, although the exact rate of decline is not known for many species. This is because salamanders have a very hidden way of life. Therefore this find is a special one. Judging the size, it could be a salamander juvenile. Think that Mother Salamander was in the neighborhood.

I have never seen one of these - very interesting.
There are none in New Zealand. We don't have land snakes or turtles or crocodiles either :)
