Hamburg is the 9th largest (busiest) port in the world. In the year 2007 it handled 9.9 millions containers (20ft units - 40 ft. units are counted as 2). The ship shown here called the "Monte Pascoal" belongs to a Hamburg Shipping Company. It can carry up to 5552 TEUs - 20 ft. containers - including 1365 Reefer containers. This ship is now-a-days only a medium size container vessel. Today the largest container ships of the world are the Emma Maersk and her sister ships which can carry more than 11,000 TEUs. Don't ask what their fuel consumption is!

It never ceases to amaze me how these behemoths can surpass the energy break-even point. They are also responsible for cleaning up a large number of port cities. In a couple of decades they have completely changed the face of freight shipping.

Ask your Congressmen and Senators why our existing wells aren't pumping more than 3 days a month? There a lot of unused capacity in existing wells.

It won't amaze you Raj that I enjoy your post very much. This post reads for me more than a book. Thanks for your link as well. The development of those type of ships goes very fast and people got accustomed to it.
About a year ago when the then biggest container vessel passed the Western Scheldt on its way to Antwerp, it was mentioned in the newspaper and a lot of people went to see her passing by. Think nowadays such a newspaper message wouldn't even lead to a higher attention, but for me it was and is up till now very impressive.
Thanks my friend for this wonderful post.
Regards, Cornelius.
