Walking along and I spotted a tree that had ears sticking out the side of it. Usually these fungi appear on dead wood aiding in the rot of it and releasing mutual beneficial enzymes into the ground that aids plants and animals in the forest. This particular shelf fungi was growing on the side of a live pine tree.

Some of these are tremendously beautiful Frank - it is also known as artist's fungus because so many talented folks have used them to paint upon.
