The Roman Coloseum occupies a site just east of the Roman Forum. Its construction started between 70 and 72 AD under the emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under Titus, with further modifications being made during Domitian's reign (81–96 AD).
The name "Amphitheatrum Flavium" is a derivitive from both Vespasian's and Titus' family name, Flavia.
Contrary to popular belief, this was not the site where the bulk of the Christians we fed to the lions. That dubious distinction goes to the Circus Maximus.
This is from a scan of a photograph taken in mid-July, 1985. I took me about 2 hours to retouch out the thumb print left on the negative by a so-called lab technician before he made the print. Life is much more pleasant in our digital age.
Fox Foto offered to reprint the bad print. They did...and it had a scratch down the middle of the negative. From that point on, I used custom labs for overseas vacation prints.
Please enjoy.
2007/12/22 - The restoration work continues, and the Colosseum is almost ready for display as a rework.
I've got to tell you..it looks great!!! And thanks for all your hard work and the history lesson to boot.
