You woke up this morning at Phantom Ranch, where the temperature was a cool 70F (21C). You started up Bright Angel Trail before the sun's rays dipped below the rim, past Indian Gardens, where the temperature was a balmy 100F (38C).

You left the Low House while the temperature goes to only 102F (39C). You are now looking for patches of shade against the rocks so you can catch the cool air flowing down the cliffs.

Thirty more minutes and you'll be at the High House, where cool water and shade awaits...Then, you look up.... You still have a 1000 feet (300 meters) to climb to get to the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River.

It's July the 8, 1980 and that Canon FTB weighed about a thousand pounds (454kg).

--note: For those in other parts of the world. Americans who live in the southern states refer to those who live in the northern climes as "snowbirds", because they often fly to our part of the country for short holidays away from the snow. I hope this provides a little warm respite from the cold.

Don, as we (people in the most European countries) are used to the 'Celsius' instead of the 'Fahrenheit' scale, I had first to convert the by you given numbers to become a proper intrepretation of what you are describing. Very impressive! This is valid (although taken already in 1980 (!) for your beautiful image as well. Very well done.

I've made the trip from the top to the bottom and back up again, only on a mule's back, so I didn't break too much of a sweat, but I wonder if that's done anymore.

I live in snow country, but I've yet to become a snowbird. I think that's for the lucky retirees among us!!

Great shot and a very descriptive narrative. I think I need to go get a cool drink!!!

In all my years, I never heard of 'snowbird'. lol When you called 70 degrees F, cool, I knew something was up! (pun intended). It's the color that impresses me about these old film images. I'd love to see this one day when I'm a snowbird!

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes
