This monument to Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson is on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. He won the day at the Battle of Trafalgar but lost his life to injuries sustained in the heat of battle, 21 October 1805. Under his direction, British ships of the line crushed the combined French and Spanish armadas, establishing Britain's rule of the seas for a century.

Architect Robert Burn designed the monument in the shape of a telescope.

A nice view as it towers above the trees.

This is an amazing piece of architecture you have found on your travels Don. I like the line of the trees below it giving it further height. Well done!

Saw this monument many times Don, but you're the first one who told me this monument was designed in the shape of an telescope. Never too old to learn, lol.
Thanks for this nice post.

That battle is responsible for one of the collar and wrist stripes on my dress blues too. Little brighter of a pic than I'd like, but the subject is really something. Thanks for sharing. By the time you post all the shots you took over there, we'll all feel like we went with you!

Of course Trafalgar square is his great monument, but it's nice the Scots made an effort too. The British fleet were the best in the world at the time. :o)
