In Piner's reworking, he got rid of telephone pole and wires. and gave it a sepia tone. All this from a pretty paltry starting shot. It's been a tutorial for me and now I am jazzed about getting some new software if I can get close to these end results and learn to use my computer like I use the frames on my walls. What I did first was to stretch the image, because it looked a bit horizontally squished, then I cropped it back down to 1600x1200.
Next, I gave the whole image a tiny bit of blur to minimize the grain and then I got rid of the pole and wire.
I also gave it a touch of circular blur to give it more "subject focus" and to enhance the feeling of depth, then I changed it to B&W.
Next, I made a new layer on top and filled it with a black & white diamond gradient, set at 50% opacity and 50% fill, to tone down the bright edges but keeping the soldier the same. Last, I added the sepia tone.

Oh my! That's one hell of an edit! What makes one try these things (like a "diamond gradient")? I see the available effects, but most of them a) look like crap, b) must be combined in some arcane permutation, and c) have percentages that must be applied most of which make it look terrible, but a few of which look magnificent. I really admire those of you who know how to work this stuff.

I know, I finally got photoshop, I can barely turn it on and when I try an effect I go way too far. Subtlety has never been my strong point. Piner knows how to get what he's going for in it.

Visualization and just being familiar with an Application ("program" for all you PC users).
My first medium was pencils, and you have to have good visualization skills to get what you want down on paper. Have patience while you learn your way around photoshop, get in the habit of saving your work often and get used to using the "undo" or "step backward" commands because you seldom get the desired effect on the first try. :c)

I think this picture is amazing. It has a very strong atmosphere about it. He looks very lonely and the choice of colour balance is fantastic!

I can better picture visiting this cemetary at night with a full moon in force and seeing this ghostly abberation patroling among the tombs. He stops, turns his head towards me with those piercing eyes and dares me to disturb any of the slumbering warriors.

Lem'me outa here...(Love the photo)
