There is a story behind this upload and next upload of this hawk in which I will relate. Last Tuesday morning as I was walking my dog Hanna along this path at Nature Preserve I spotted this Hawk perched high in tree in bush about 60 yards away with about 50 yards of high grassland between me and bird. So I tied Hanna up and attempted to get closer toy Hawk but he flew away. Next morning I seen him again in same tree and took pictures from where I was but too far away. I was able to confirm that it is a Red Tailed Hawk after putting these pictures in computer and zooming in...but they were not good pictures. So I got the idea that maybe if I got out there and hid in bush before he showed I could get my pictures. So Saturday I got out there at 8:30 AM and hid in bush and he showed about 9:30 but flew over... I guess I was't hidden good enough as these guys have tremendous eyesight. I stayed out there and walked the dog for hour and took some more pitures of songbirds and headed home about 1:30 PM. Only drove about a mile down road when I seen this Hawk perched in tree beside road..so pulled over to shoulder of road and backed up to him, slid over to passenger side of vehicle and rolled down the window and got these shots. If you look closely you can see red blood on his perch and on his claws so I assume got these just after he had lunch. Was shot with Nikon D50 camera fitted with Tamron 70-300 lens set at 300mm. Shutter 1/3200 aperture f/7.1 and ISO 800.

Shorenuf, there's blood and gore everywhere. Clarity is great in this Gerry. Very cold days are also good for hawking as they will perch in trees and telephone lines and stay there as they are conserving energy by watching the ground for food from a vantage point and not having thier wings exposed to the cold.

Really, really good Gerry, I'm really jealous now, This shot is very very good, and what a story, what a photographer must suffer to make such great captures.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

I was just reading on line how to use your car as a bird blind, and I guess the fellow knew what he was talking about. Thanks for the story behind this shot. It makes it all the more interesting to know that your dedication and persistence brought this beauty to us and I personally want to congratulate you and thank you for all that hard work...isn't it great?
