This Latin phrase inscribed on the bridge approximately translates "suspension crossing made with difficulty" There was an awful lot of practical problems building this revolutionary crossing, & the financial costs rocketed. The work even stopped for some time, & there was talk of scrapping the project towards the end !

Brunel won the bridge build design competition in 1830 at the tender age of 24 it was the 2nd contest ! The bridge wasn't opened until 1864 but Brunel died of a stroke at 53 never seeing it's completion .. such is life. :o)

Lecture over kids I'll be expecting an essay from you next week, paul1972 / Top cat should do especially well as he was on shoot with me, & visited the on-site information cabin. :o)

On a serious note hurricane Gustav is approaching Cuba, & the Gulf Coast I'll be thinking especially of my friend EJ, & all the particularly unfortunate residents of Louisiana .. take care Froggy, Phlossie signing off.

Another great angle to rival Paul's image. This is really good Phil as it is different to the usual pictures you see of The Bridge.

Great shot, although I am getting dizzy looking up at the tower of the bridge. Better up than down. LOL.

Yeah nice one Phlossie, I took a similar one to this (honest old chap) but mine was at a slighter less angle. I like the focusing too, got it close up as well as the writing on the bridge.

You and Paul or as Dizzy Dean was fond of saying: "Me and Paul are unbeatable." I think you two did great and you kept me in suspension with this shot. Angle is good. I think the worse of Gustav has passed and it wasn't as bad as predicted. That is a good thing. Good work Phlossie.
