The clouds that Eubeen mentions may be the beginning of wave clouds, a type of lenticular cloud. Lenticular clouds are stationary lens-shaped clouds that form at high altitudes, normally aligned at right-angles to the wind direction. Where stable moist air flows over a mountain or a range of mountains, a series of large-scale standing waves may form on the downwind side. Lenticular clouds sometimes form at the crests of these waves and are often very large and dramatic (I recommend Goggling Lenticular Clouds for some truly spectacular views). Under certain conditions, long strings of small lenticular clouds can form, creating a formation known as a wave cloud. Quite often the heat of the day is a major element in the creation of a cloud and, since this is obviously the end of the day and the air is cooling, these wave clouds are not well developed but still beautiful. It reminds me of the old classic b&w western movies that used Indian smoke signals as part of the plot, where the flinty-eyed wagon train guide "reads the signs" for the not-too savvy pioneers. A beautiful shot, one I think should be in the permanent gallery.
