the eagles remain this mottled color until they are about 4 years old. at that time (although it happens gradually) their heads turn white and the body gets a deeper brown.
He is well camouflaged against the sand and stone Jen and looks like he has something to eat there too! Wonderful capture. I bet you were glad he sat still while you too the photograph.
I've seen quite a few eagle pictures and most of them were mature. But I really do like this because it shows some of their wonderfully strange cycles and growing up stages.

Thanks for the info on this young eagle. This is a well done capture. Nice detail with the feathers on his neck and that brutal but necessary beak. Good texture with the sand and rocks. Good calm blue river/lake background. Neat you are in an area where you can find these fantastic birds. Great work, as usual Jen :))
