Meet the CRAB - Coastal Research Amphibious Buggy. This is a three (3) wheeled vehicle developed by the Wilmington district of the U.S. Army Engineering Department. It was part of the equipment utilized during the beach replenishment project on the New Jersey shoreline after hurricane Sandy. It was designed to survey and measure the amount of newly pumped sand in order to maintain that the height and grade remain the same. The CRAB is powered by a 53hp Volkswagen engine. Its top speed on land is 2 mph and less in water. It stands 35 feet high and weighs 18,000 lbs. The project was completed on time and the beach is better than ever! P.S. Beginning Tuesday, December 9, a Nor'easter is set to bring two days of heavy winds and rain along the Jersey shoreline and beyond - ugh.

Laura, the only similarity with a real crab is its speed in water, lol. Interesting development. Good image my friend!

Interesting and informative Laura - my father was born in Philadelphia and always spoke fondly of going to the Jersey shore - glad it's back - I hope the Nor'easter isn't too bad.

We could use the rain...send it our way! lol Great image of the CRAB and interesting description. (I think the image is a little tilted?) Glad the restoration project is complete with a new beach, and I imagine you get a lot of inclement weather on the shoreline. Anyway, this is a great shot.

This doesn't look like any VW I've seen before! I used to frequent the Jersey Shore just around when Bruce was playing at the Stoned Pony. Lots of great (and youthful) memories from the various boardwalks. Thanks for sharing and jaunting my memories, Laura.

P.S. "What Exit?" lol

Laura - It looks a bit like something from a sic-fi movie - an alien invasion of earth. How good that the shore is getting restored after the horrible damages of Sandy. Thad
