Constantine the Great was the first Christian to rule the Roman Empire. This was taken in York, England in which in the time Constantine was hailed to rule, year AD306, the city was called Eboracum. But it was not until AD312, the legend says that in fear of the size of his opposing army in war that the Pagan Constantine looked to the gods for aid and received a sign, a burning cross in the sky. That night God came to him in a dream and said "With this sign conquer" The armies then fought with crosses on their shields and were victorious. Constantine had a strong influence on the rise of Cristianity in Western Europe.
