A male Brown-Headed Cowbird among the blossoms. Rather obvious as to how it got it's name me thinks. A species that is a prime example of the how different the plummage colors can be between sexes. Of interest is the fact these birds are "vagabonds", depositing their eggs in the nests of other species and moving on ... leaving the rearing of the young cowbirds to some unlucky foster parents. Talk about having your cake and eating it too ...

The female may be seen by clicking HERE.

Well I have never heard of a cowbird, same habits as the cuckoo :)

Another superb photo John, both the bird, and he flowers.

This time I have to say that I think the female is prettier! LOL He does have lovely, dark, masculine colors and he looks a tad grumpy. Good clarity on this fellow.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

Great series John, In Belgium, we have a word that we use as vagebond as in 'lady en de vagebond', wich means Lady and the tramp, so I think this bird is a sort of a tramp ;)
