That's what the herring gull's latin name is apparently. Or to be completely accurate, Larus Argentatus Argentaus. I post this despite my misgivings about these things. For those who haven't seen the story, I was 'mugged' by one in Eastbourne a couple of weeks ago. I was walking down the street eating a sandwich and one flew smack into the back of my head. When I recovered it was there on the ground looking at me, having taken the sandwich from my hand and wolfed it down in one mouthful. This is an early experiment with my new Sigma 70-300mm lens.

I just want to know one thing. What kind of sandwich was it? LOL. That name is too long for me to remember, so I'd just call it Larus. Excellent presentation of this bird, Nigel. You might want to consider buying some Gull Repellent Spray next time you walk down the street eating.

I think it's a pact between all gulls Nigel lol. They act the same at Myrtle Beach also, wanting whatever you're eating and expecting it to be given without question. I haven't been attacked yet (thankfully) but they have gotten their revenge on my jeep several times lol. Wonderful closeup you've shared with us. What a proud stance it has.

The b/g shading and colour is spot on. The beak/eye is in sharp detail, however the rest is not. I very much like the dominant look to this, especialy given what he/she did :) Wish I had that lens. You will succeed quite nicely my friend. Let's see some more!

So, you got mugged by a bird? Couldn't have happened to a more worthy person. Love the bird, especially the eye level view. I don't know anything about that lens so I'll watch your postings with great interest.

Hope you don't develope a phobia about gulls after an event like that. Quite an imperious look on this bird. Do you think word got around that you're an easy mark? Great shot, Nigel, and have fun with the new lens.

im still laughing at the story of the seagull despite reading it before and you telling me it, it is funny! lol. but you did great getting this one, he is a fairly large imposing looking bird and im impressed with the latin name for it! lol. i think i have one pretty much the same as this, did you get as many out of focus flying ones as i did?? lol, great focus on that beak, glad we ate our butties in the car i would have hated to see you get smacked in the back of the head again.

They fly around, looking for the most gullible person they can find--then whammo. At least he didn't get it to go. Great shot with your new lens Sir Nigel. Love the soft background.
