This large distinctive bee [Xylocopa violacea] was photographed on Kefalonia, Greece during my 2005 holiday there. It's a mostly Mediterranean species but more are turning up in UK each year. There has been an unsubstantiated report in the last few days of an overwintering colony in an old orchard in Leicestershire. They love boring into old wood - hence the name:) Global warming in action...?
