In celebration of the 17th anniversary of the launch and deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA has released one of the largest panoramic images ever taken with Hubble's cameras. It is a 50-light-year-wide view of the central region of the Carina Nebula where a maelstrom of star birth - and death - is taking place. This is a shrunken version – the original image being over 25,000 pixels wide.

It''s amazing what goes on out there in space, we are sooo small and infinitesimal compared to the vastness of creation and all that is going on. Good post Phil.

Oh Phil, I have been waiting and looking for the perfect desktop for my laptop...and here it is! I have already downloaded it and it looks so cool in the office, especially with the lights off and the stars twinkling! Whew, this is quite a space view, a place where life and death of the real stars occurs.
I am sure that you did a lot of work in not only downsizing it, but in cleaning it up and then presenting it to us for our viewing enjoyment.
To you, my Space teacher, thank you, thank you, thank you for all you do to educate me further and bring me visual pleasure with incredible images as well as accompanying narratives.
To my favorites as well ;=)

Hi Phil, nice job, as always... since i'm astronomer, i have to add this info: carina nebula (NGC 3372) is giant diffuse nebula and one of the largest H II regions (composed of ionized hydrogene gas) in our Milky Way Galaxy. It is located about 7000 light years from Earth, in constellation Carina

Good job my friend

My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all. The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge - Stephen Hawking

yep - the 1.4GB uncompressed tiff was a joy to work with - nearly as much fun as the 600MB compressed download ;-)
