Another pre-1918 European postcard collected by my grandfather, Grover Hendricks, during his service with the US Army in France. The heroic flag holding routine is still common everywhere, and victory themed cards like this were probably the equivalent of 'buy war bonds'. The hand painting was quick and crude, an assembly line effort. And the graininess concentrated across the top isn't dust, but flecks of red paint, flicked on with a brush to create a color gradient. Last, I haven't seen anything like that hat since Katherine Helmond wore a shoe on her head in the movie Brazil. That was bravery.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB
