Little Mama, a friend I've been feeding, for over six years, and, who has brought her new batch of young-uns to meet me, each year, is back, My guess is, she figured I was having trouble getting Blue to behave, last year, and prudently, stayed away.I didn't put out any food for her, for the same reason. She's getting ready for hibernation, and made a glutton of herself last night, and was still out there picking at Blue's kibble, when I looked out, early this morning. I thought I'd have to lift her onto the tree, to get her moving, but she finally climbed up, where you see her. She's about 40 feet off the ground, and since it was already daylight, she just settled in for her sleep. I went out on the balcony this afternoon, and I suppose I disturbed her. I came in for a camera, when I notice her watching me. She looks small, here, but I'd guess she weighs about 40 pounds, or more.. I took this with a Canon 20 D - 480mm lens, 1/60th at f5.6, ISO 400. Pretty cute, for a little old lady, with more than 30 kids, thay I know of.Hope you like her.

Forget all the technical aspects of this one Doug ... It's just plain old "adorable". What a great shot and a wonderful commentary.

I love this. But then again I like Raccoons! We had a little female that would come onto the porch and actually put her paws up on my leg looking for a handout. Thanks for this image ... brings back memories :)

She's a particularly beautiful raccoon, with that pretty dark fur...

And your photograph of her is quite fetching! I love the pose and the composition. Her expression is priceless.

(For anybody who lives in the United States east of the Ohio River: raccoons are the single biggest rabies vector species we have. Take heed. Keep your distance. Don't even pick up tiny orphans; call a licensed rehabber who has been innoculated against rabies. The rehabbers' group of which I am a member see at least one case of rabies in our raccoons every year.)

Doug, what a wonderful portrait.
You want to know what I do when an image is slightly out of focus and you want to salvage it? Especially in this one I think it would be wonderful. You could put it through the dreamsuite program and make it officially dreamy! They use a blur and blend in that program to begin with.

She's a beauty. Sort of a raccoon model, I'd say, what with the way she posed for you. It's nice that you give her food. Some might disagree, but people need to stay as connected to animals and nature while they still can. Not in our generation, but in just a few further, it will be very difficult to have this kind of interaction. Thanks for the wonderful shot!

I very cool wild animal portrait Doug. The overall softness suggests your lens was near it's limit? But I think the central area of the face is sharp enough for the fringe softness not to be a problem. The expression is all in that central area, and what an expression it is, sleepy intelligence.
