This is one steeeep hill. The signs don't even provide the grade, though they do suggest using a lower gear. That lengthy slit crossing the valley is the Rio Grande, and all beyond it is Mexico. You may notice a rather large number of boulders above the mountain wall on the right side. Doesn't seem like many, but from the other direction, you can see a continuous row of them all the way up the hill, and it can be a bit intimidating.

I would use a low gear to make an about turn Doug! Not only the boulders but the whole area looks intimidating and you have made it even worse intimidating with your postwork :)
