This caterpillar hangs around in his cocoon all day in my backyard. He emerges at night to eat leaves but he never completely leaves the cocoon so I haven’t seen his back legs yet. As he eats the leaves in one area he moves the cocoon to a new bunch of fresh leaves. I don’t know how he moves the cocoon around but he does because it’s at site number 4 at the moment.

Fantastic macro, Robert! I do hope he turns into something beautiful. Maybe his other end hasn't fully matured yet. :)

I can't tell from the picture but extactly how big is he? I've never seen a caterpillar like that in my part of the world. What a very clear close up maybe you can sell it to an insect journal. I can't say he's attractive but very unusual.
Good Job Robert!

Well thank you Dianne but I don’t know how big he is because he’s too shy to come right out and be seen.

A smart beastie Robert
But it'll not get one over on you !! Cindy may have a point perhaps it's not fully developed yet. I can imagine a young lad having a lot of fun with it. ;o)
Well done on this creepy upload

First I was only watching your image. It has cost me some time to discover what you'd captured. Reading afterwards your narrative, it turned out that my assumption was right. Great macro Robert. Very well done!

Gadzooks Robert, he's ugly and abit scary - are those claws? I sure don't see any cute lil feet here!! Well, you did get fine details of this bugger and his cocoon. Quite a colourful fellow too. An excellent nature shot, but it's ekky too :^>

He should be featured in a movie: "The Nighttime Killer Cocoon!!!" Just kidding. It's a really excellent shot--do you know what he'll be when he "grows up"?

How is the caterpillar doing? It's been over 2 months with no update on his progress It's weird I find him really gross but oddly fascinated by his ugliness.

He has been pupating for quite a few weeks Diane. When spring arrives he will emerge as a fully-grown moth.
