These red one-room schoolhouses were ubiquitous in the US in the 19th and into the early part of the 20th century. Situated in small developments or towns all the children ages 6-14 learned together with one teacher who divided the time up between various age groups. Not an ideal learning situation but it got the job done. This schoolhouse was moved from a small town in central Illinois to the historic site in Deerfield IL.

My late husband attended a one room school house until high school. It was situated in corn country, his father was a corn farmer. I think there was a total of 15 students and the older ones helped the younger ones. The teacher roomed with his family on their farm for a time. My husband related the experience as one of the happiest times in his life. This is a wonderful image of 109!

Kathy, I find this to be a superb image, your editing is very good one this one. We had a one room school house not far from here, but sorry to say it was torn down to make more room for the farmer. I found Connie's comment very interesting, and heartwarming. Tigs♥ =^..^=

The one room school houses had a lot of history behind them & including teaching the young children of the past. This is a wonderful capture showing us such wonderful detail. So glad they just moved it to a different location and not tearing this beauty down. Now other people can enjoy the history past.

Kathy - I like the old tone of this image, adding character to the age of the schoolhouse. Thad
