Caedes

New Member Websites

Submitted by caedes 03/17/05 3:33 AM GMT

As a special thank you to the members of the Cadre, I've set up a system which allows you to have your own custom caedes.net web site. Cadre members now have the opportunity to get a web address of http://username.caedes.net/. For details, just hop over to the page detailing website setup. If you are not yet a member you can go to the Caedes Cadre page for details on joining.

Great idea. This alone should provide incentive for some people to join the cadre.

Yes this is quite a good idea...I hope that this isn't abused in the most obvious ways that it could be abused though...be careful Caedes!

I'm very glad to see this! It may just entice me to come out of lurking mode! :D Although, when I click on the setup link, I get a message that says "Acces to this page is restricted." Am I required to have a recent donation for this feature? Oh wait...I see...my little "::" symbol has dissapeared! Didn't realize it had been so long! Time to remedy that, I suppose!

Hrrm...except I'm afraid I'm already lost on instruction #1! No idea where to go to set the server name or ftp port number.....

Have I just revealed my abject stupidity?! ha!

if you can find a tutorial on google about using ftp then that should be enough to get you going. I'm thinking about adding an in-browser file manager (like geocities used to have) for those who don't want to use a separate ftp client.

I see, then I do need an ftp program...eek!

This might not be the place for this....but I think another great incentive for Cadre members would be a more interactive user page!

Everyone has an FTP client built in if they have a Windows operating system.

just press Start...Run....and type FTP

the big black window that pops up would be your FTP program :)

Caedes: Me and CanoeGuru (maybe others?) cannot send a file. I was successful in creating directories, but the file that I sent apparently didn't make it there. Could this be a problem on your end?

Internet Explorer has a very easy to use FTP interface. Just put "ftp://USERNAME@caedes.net:21" into the location bar, and it should come up as a regular explorer window. You can then drag your index.html file over (I believe caedes has disallowed viewing directory contents, so you'll need a file named that to be visible). Several of the mods have been able to set up pages, so unless there's a permissions error, it should be working for the cadre as well.

If you can find a copy of ws_ftp le its easy to use and works really good.

Well, I use the normal DOS FTP Client, and it shouldn't be any different in terms of information transmittion discrepances...I can create directories, remove them, but I cant view the directory list and I cant send anything. However I am able to delete a file if one existed there...

The one and only free FileZilla -- currently the best FTP client for Windows imho.

My cadre has long expired, but I don't need the web space (as caedes knows ;-) so I'll just wait a bit longer.

I'm currently able to upload files just fine by using the GNU ftp client on Linux. When I get the opportunity to test it on windows then I'll see what the problem could be. My first thought is that you haven't turned on passive mode in your client. Try that. I'll add it to the instructions now.

Rad: I'm not saying that IE should work any better for you, but it will be much easier for any newbs to get started with. When the mods were testing the service I experienced a similar problem, but caedes chalked it up to the firewall and fixed it. I would say check your firewall settings and/or try another ftp client.

Wow, now I really feel terrible for still not renewing my subscription. I figure if I wait for my next paycheck, it will give the rest of you time to clean out the bugs. :-)

You can put whatever you want on your site as long as it is legal and doesn't affect the server too much (no really large files). It also only supports static content (no cgi or php scripts).

well it would all be legal.. as far as building the site itself, i do Flash design.. as long as the .swf file was kept small, would that be allowed? if so, what kind of size restrictions would you propose?

thanks for the speedy response
