It is about time for us to make a major upgrade to the server that runs caedes.net. I've had my eye on a Dual Xeon machine for some time and I think the site is finally at the point where the resources can be put to use. The server has twice the resources (CPU, RAM, disk, bandwidth) as the current machine and (not suprisingly) costs twice as much. If I decide to do the upgrade next month then you can expect to see the site speed improve around the September 20th.

Where do we currently keep our server? Is it at a server place or is it at your house? ;-)

The server is currently located (and will stay) in a very large and high quality datacenter in Houston (ev1servers.net). The server has a 100Mbit connection to the datacenter network which has about 10 backbone providers (much better than a single connection of any type).

That should make the site more responsive, I’ve noticed it slows down some when the number of members online climb above 130 or so.

The datacenter has a contract with Dell, so they don't offer Opteron or Apple servers (otherwise I would certainly get a dual-core dual processor Opteron). I have considered switching to another server provider so that I can get an Opteron, but there have always been questions as to the reliability of the other datacenters. The bottom line is that the best deal has to take into consideration the price, server, network, support services, and overall company quality.

I have some good news. I was fiddling around with the database (added some indexes and increased cache sizes), and it seems to have significantly reduced the cpu use. Now we are only reaching a maximum cpu use of around %50 (it was around %90). Maybe I'll be able to stave off a hardware upgrade after all.

Due to the database optimizations that I made shortly after this announcement the upgrade really isn't needed right now. That's a pretty good thing because it is a lot easier on me to not have to move the whole site over to a different server. =)
