Contest #16: "Breaking the Rules"

Submitted by Piner 10/14/05 5:42 AM GMT

Are you familiar with the generally accepted "rules" of photography like the rule of thirds? Well we want you to forget about all that! Instead, we want good photos which break as many of these photography "rules" as possible. The more rules broken simultaneously, the better! In your entry, be sure to include some detailed analysis of the rule breaking that you're doing.

All images still have to abide by the CoC as well as the following contest-specific "laws" (so we don't get them mixed up with the "rules" that you're supposed to be breaking). More below...

Rules Not to Break

  • No Photo Manipulations or Modifications (excludes resizing for uploading)
  • No Computer Generated Images
  • No Snap-shots
  • No Public Domain or Stock Images
  • No Teams
  • Maximum of Two Entries Per Member
  • Submit Only New Images (have not been on caedes.net before)
  • You Must Describe the Photography Rule(s) You Have Broken in the Image Description. (otherwise, the image will be disqualified)
  • Contest entries should be uploaded to the "Contests->Current Contest" gallery

Here are some examples of breaking the rules.

We will start accepting images on Sunday, October 16th at 12:01 am EST. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, October 30th at 11:59 PM EST.

The goal of the contest is that you must break the "rules" of good photography while producing a pleasing image. The rules you should try to break are listed in the link provided. The rules listed above, not in the link, are rules you cannot break.

Oh boy, when I think of all the stuff I have uploaded here with absolutely no regard for rules, lol...this brings me to a question...I understand that previous uploads to the site are not eligible, but must the contest entry be a current shot or may we draw upon possible photos that we have on hand but never dared upload before due to 'broken rules'?...also, I notice in the link examples that the photographer not only states the rule broken but also why he chose to do so and what made it a good photo as a result of that choice...when we state what rule we broke, should we also state why and why we think it's still a good photo or leave that part to the viewers and judges?...well, this will be fun and more of a challenge than it sounds...thanks Tom...looking forward to what 'rebellious' entries show up.:Pat.

Mesmerized- As long as it is a photo you have captured and you haven't uploaded it before, you can submit it. Just state what rule(s) were broken in the image.

Jeffo- No modifying the images.... that means no desaturating. No changing the images at all except to size it for upload.

One of the rules that you may not break is "No snap shots" so your entry wouldn't qualify. Plus the idea is that you break the rule but still have a brilliant photograph. I don't think the concept is that difficult to grasp.

"Manipulation" usually referrs to changes made after you've retrieved the photo from the camera. Any pre-process photography techniques aren't considered photo-manipulations (more like "light manipulations").

Shamless plug (taught to me by Phil); my image "Endeavor" breaks (if nothing else) a general standard. You ever read those articles in those photography magazines where mortals send in their work and gods say that this and that could be better? A surprising amount tend to tell you to not center your object, but rather to put it towards the border; they want you to "give it some space". This is generally for the purpose of providing the illusion that your subject, often stationary, is moving, and seeing as how moving is moving towards something and that moving towards something can be construed as having goals, it is supposed to make your pictures more inspirational (gee). Well, I popped an old reached-the-end-of-my-rope on this one. As for the rest of the contest, maybe I would be better prepared for breaking the rules if I knew 'em a bit more. *shrugs*

How much manipulation is allowed on these photographs? like is color correcting allowed but editing stuff out not? how far can you go?

10/17/05 10:07 AM GMT
Personally I wouldn't have said that removing noise, for example, or correcting colours wasn't manipulation any more than cropping a picture. However, they seem to have been pretty much been ruled out above. For safety's sake, I would say don't do anything to your photos, Captain Oats. As a horse, you may be allowed some special dispensation of course...

The irony is that practically any photo I take probably breaks rules, but I need to work out which ones.

Does manipulation include: in camera, there are colour options, like contrast and saturation and sharpness. when the raw file is uploaded to the computer, it can be adjusted using the same settings as can be used on the camera, using the same process, in the Raw file software.

or will i have to go and take some new ones with all the settings adjusted in the camera already. ;D

i dont' think changing the way the camera takes the picture should be considered manipulation. only certain things you do to it on certain programs. i don't even understand half the rules in the photography rules list. haha. well i'll just break a few and see what comes out. personally i bet most of these entries are gonna suck. but thats how you get some really unique shots.
