The Official 2006 Caedes.net Calendar

Submitted by caedes 11/04/05 3:12 AM GMT

This is a call for images for the 2006 calendar. I hope to have the calendar ready for sale before December, so we need to get going on this project. Here is a page which has more details and a form to use to submit your image nominations. I'm really looking forward to giving these out this year as gifts, so if you've ever wanted your work in print or you want to show off your work to the family every single day of the year get your images nominated ASAP.

Um, is the submitting cover designs a separate thing (like it sounds in the explanation) or is it going to be chosen from among the nominated images?

The cover design has different requirements from a normal image. If you look at the example of last year's calendar you'll see that we need room for a title and content listing. It would be best if the submitted cover designs would include those as well.

I've looked into the current shipping charges at the printer that we used last year. Let it suffice to say that I was not happy with the charges. I set them a strongly worded letter, and I am currently looking for similar services elsewhere.

If you would like to help you can look around on the web for similar services. The printer needs to provide a wall calendar with custom monthly images and cover image. They also need to provide shipping of the item directly to each individual calendar customer (not a bulk shipment of them all to one person).

Many of the businesses that people are pointing me to will only make a certain large batch of calendars and then mail them all to me. What I want is a service which will take the orders and ship the calendars directly to you guys since I don't really have the time to break-in-bulk a large shipment of calendars.

Right now CafePress looks like the best deal. Shipping is only $4 in the US and $7 for international. The base price is a bit higher than daprints offers, but the lower shipping fees really make the difference.

Chosing the images in the calendars is not going to be an easy process. Obviously, I'd like it to be a fair process, but constraints such as getting the seasons filled up, having only one image per artists per calendar, and having separate themes is going to make it difficult. Right now we have enough content for 26 calendars, so there will inevitably be some images which do not get in a calendar.

Some of the criteria that we will use will be

1. Quality of the image and professionalism.
2. Time the author has been on caedes.net.
3. Number of images the author already has in a calendar.
4. How much we need the season that the image fits into.
5. How many of a particular theme of images we currently have.

There was an AMAZING photo recently of a NO sax man next to the river called New Orleans (I believe) --here is the link to the pic: It doesn't necessarily go to any holiday, but it is a great reminder to us of what we have in life (that can so quickly be lost) and to cherish those things...family and friends, music, joy...I wasn't sure if I should nominate it for the calendar, but thought I'd put it past you guys and see what you thought. I think (for me) a calendar coming from such amazing artists as we have here, should not just focus on the seasons, but on LIFE, and this image certainly captures the wonderfulness of it.

The seasons is just to give me options for the case where we do want to put the seasonal images in the correct place. Certainly we will have an oportunity to create non-seasonal themes as well (fractals being an obvious example).

"Larger" referrs both the pixel size and file size (less compression).

I'm also interested in hearing opinions on acceptable prices and shipping charges so that I'll know what services are acceptabel to the most members, thanks.

Perhaps I'm abit late but I just submitted 5 images...couldn't decide what to do...fyi, a couple I submitted were only 1024 x 768 in my gallery, smaller than requested, but I can certainly supply a much larger version if interested...in some cases, I have 3008 x 2000..also I am curious about the larger versions being needed...on one image title I submitted, some color editing was done on the smaller uploaded version so the one in my gallery is better than the original.

Well, in my defence, we didn't have enough time to order a proof from the printer before people wanted to start buying the calendars, and the dimensions that the printer gave of available printing space was innaccurate. I'm sure that if we decide to use CafePress the results will be more acceptable.

Everyone should make sure that the title of your images and your "real name" (in your Profile) are the same that you want to appear on the calendar image. That's where I'm getting the info to print below each image. In the next few days I'm going to prepare previews of the calendars so that we can make sure everyone's name is spelled correctly and I'll make the calendars available at cafepress shortly thereafter.
