New 'Archive' Function Introduced

Submitted by caedes 12/10/05 4:56 PM GMT

I've added a new function which will allow the the Senate members to 'archive' old images instead of deleting them. Archived images will still appear in your author gallery and your control panel, they just won't be in the main galleries. Only images which violate the Code of Conduct will be deleted. At the end of the first month that an image is on the website we will make a decision to either promote the image to the permanent galleries or to archive it. I think that you'll agree that archiving is preferable to flat out deleting images, and I think this will avoid much of the consternation surounding our previous policy of deleting old images.

Very cool idea! This way we'll be able to compare our old work to our new work more easily. =)

What a great idea!

What will happen to images that may rest in peoples favourites once they're archived?

The only difference is that an archived image will not appear in the new images gallery, so favorites would be unaffected.

I think this is such a great idea..I know of a lot of people who will love this. And it will certainly makes things easier as to how to find our photos..and not wonder where they've disappeared to. I appreciate very much this plan..very kewl indeed!!

this is a good idea cos there were photos deleted which i had wished had not been

will there be any objections to uploading what i think were more worthy _old_ photos that got deleted earlier so that they end up in the archive ?

Great idea! Now, I have an older, favorite image that I feel never should have been deleted in the first place. It was very popular, never had a c-index rating lower than 73. Can I re-upload it?

Yes, we will allow you to upload images which were previously deleted, however they will have to be immediately archived (they already had their 15 minutes of fame). If you decide to re-upload an old work please include a note in the description indicating that it should be archived.

This is a great idea, as I'm sure consideration has already been given to the long-term server capacity. I guess it's not much of a big deal since it doesn't add to bandwidth at all. Do I smell another hike in the standards for permanent gallery images? People ought to be much more understanding about their images generally not making the permanent galleries now that they can at least keep them in their own galleries.

One nice consequence of this will be putting an end to all the broken links around the site because of so many images getting deleted. There are a few points that peak my curiosity:

Will archived images continue to receive votes through the random voting (particularly images that are re-uploaded straight to archives that won't have any votes and will likely never receive very many comments)?

Are there any "deleted" images that may be restored, such as ones deleted in the past few days? For some reason I thought there was a period in which deleted images were not really deleted yet, but that could be my imagination. If it's true, restoring any possible images would be great since it would save comments and ratings.

Rather than requiring artists to note "for archives" in upload descriptions, wouldn't it be fairly easy to add an archive category for uploads, or better yet, an archive checkbox so that a regular category can still be specified? That would also easily enable people to self-direct new uploads straight to the archive gallery (good for personal images, etc.), which may help to cut down on the volume of submissions to the new images gallery.

At the very least this is just a nice feature that I think everyone can appreciate, good thinking. Don't forget to add it to the Caedes Timeline, it is a very noteworthy addition.

1. Votes: Archived images will not receive votes through the voting booth.
2. Deleted images: There are not currently any deleted images on the server that can be restored.
3. 'Archived' upload option: I might add this function, however it would not be a permanent addition to the upload page because it will only really be relevant in the near term and would otherwise complicate the upload procedure.
4. Tiimeline: Only time will tell if it is a noteworthy addition. ;-)

If self-portraits don't quite make it to the permanent galleries, will there be a guaranteed space for them in the archives? My self-portrait has a terrible c-index, but I don't want to "hide behind the icon" just because it recieved low votes (if you know what I mean).

If archiving does save on bandwith, don't they still have to be saved somewhere? At 70 new images a day, how long will your hard disks be able to keep up?

The bandwidth is just a measure of data transfer. Having more or less data on the server doesn't necessarily mean more or less transfer between the server and visitors. I think expanding the actual storage space on the server is probably almost negligibly inexpensive compared to the cost of hosting the site.

Torque's analysis of the effects of bandwidth and diskspace are pretty accurate. In a years time we would only gain about 40 GB of images. We can get an new 80 GB drive in the server for only $19 per month. Additionally, archived images won't need to take up as much space as the other images since we wouldn't have to keep the smaller sizes on disk all the time. This would reduce the required disk space to 13 GB per year.

Bob: the new deal is: after ฑ one or two monthes, if an image (present in the New Images gallery) was not promoted in the permanent galleries, it will be archived, not deleted. The archived images are still viewable, but only in the personal gallery of the author.
Philip: if you have somes images older than one or two monthes, which are not in the permanent galleries, that means they are archived...
Actually, all images before 11/11/05 were promoted or archived. For example, your 'Cd water drops' was recently archived.

First, I think the new Archive Function is a great idea! Second, given that historically many images have remained in the "new images" galleries for far more than a month before being "promoted" to the main galleries, I support actually designating that images have been "archieved" as opposed to the idea that they are automatically archived if they are older than one month. Third, what about images that were removed before the new voting system went into effect? Is it possible to re-upload them as new images and allow them to be viewed in the voting booth?

Again, I applaud this new function. I think there are many images that many agree deserve "permanent" status that simply are not "judged" to deserve promotion to the main galleries. This new function will allow viewers access to such images. Thanks!
