Contest IV: The (nano) world around us

Submitted by caedes 08/12/03 2:24 AM GMT

The next contest topic will be "The (nano) world around us." "nano" means really freaking small, so I want to see really close-up images of things we see everyday. These can be from plants, animals, or right in your own house. As a secondary contest we will give a prize the image that's the hardest for us to find it's source. Images should be uploaded to the contest gallery before August the 25th. Good luck!

Hopefully he means macro, because micro photography equipment is way out of my photography budget . . . =)

no, nano would mean very small, it's actually smaller than micro.

i think we all really need more details about this, especially for digital art. i think any attempt at portraying the nano world will just end up as a complete abstraction. it could be some type of abstract pattern thing, that'd be cool. i'd like it anyway [:D]

The prefix nano- just means one billionth of whatever unit you put after it (for instance nano-meters). Since I didn't put a unit it just means "really small" without any possibility of being more specific. I think the topic lends itself to photography and digital art about equally since I originally had in mind a digitally rendered pollen spore that I found on DigitalBlasphemy and a few "what is this" type of photos that some of my friends shared on a discussion board a while back. Many SLR cameras have a macro function on the lens that comes with the camera, but if your's doesn't then you'll either have to get more creative with it or possibly try your hand at another medium.

Hope this helps a little.

BTW I've posted an image in the contest gallery as an example. "SEM image of cotton" is neither an SEM photo or of cotton. It was created very simple with Photoshop.
