Compose your subject so that it is "framed" on at least two sides with either foreground or background elements.
Notes:
'Two sides'; top and bottom ... left and right-hand sides. Or, some visually pleasing combination of either.
p.s. Since 'spring' is thrice represented ... thus far ... the framing concept/idea/topic ... still allows for submission of 'spring-like' imagery. 'Cept ... in my humble opinion, of course ... ups the ante on the creativity aspect and the challenge/contest itself.
p.p.s. Fractologists? Investigate the appropriate variations. They do exist and will create 'framing' elements/facets within your flame.

"There is always something waiting at the end of the road ... if you're not willing to see what it is ... you probably shouldn't be out there in the first place."
Hmmm, I like the idea of framing ... and I am up for a challenge that will work towards that of improving my compositional skills, think I will change my vote ...

Because I put up the stained glass and it could give me a rest (unless Sunday I were to go to a different church with interesting stained glass), I will not change my vote but I will draw everybody's attention to the fact that all topics mentioned prior to Les' fav could easily be included in 'Framing!' :o)
Edit: I was the last one in SG so I was able to move my vote! :o)

It is known that there is an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the product of a deranged imagination.

Considering when we have Spring in parts North of the Equator, it is Winter in the South of the Equator, it doesn't seem quite fair to choose Spring. SO I will choose framing, at least that way we will get all sorts of new ideas. Verena
Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.

tis true, in fact we only have two season where I live - Summer and Winter (which is approaching) - so when the Four Seasons group decided to open up a resort here it caused lots of confusion with the locals :-)
I wasn't going to do this ... however, to get some creative energies flowing (I hope) and enthusiasm for 'framing' as a topic/theme/challenge what follows below is presented in a three-step flow.
This first part addresses the 'why' behind making use of framing as a compositional technique/element. Easy to understand and very concise:
If you are a beginner to the arts, believe the information imparted will be of benefit to you.
If you find yourself stagnating and are kind of meandering around your creative pursuits ... there is some inspiration to be found in the above links. Use/view at your own discretion.
Inasmuch as the information proffered above is 'photographically-centric' ... I do believe one can extrapolate on the points made and still find some value contained therein.

Something tells me ,correct me if I'm wrong, that Les wants framing to be he topic for this contest! I have to agree....it does present a challenge, including if you can find a natural frame in the image that your taking. Spring is a great topic but with framing you can take 'spring' and just make it better. I think the sky is the limit for Framing!

children at play, pets et al = bad idea fully opens up the can of worms of uploading snapshots as contest entries which already trickles through as it is.

To the guy without chickens, as his mind 'springs' into action with more suggestions and guidelines than coops have chickens (a takeoff from 'carters has pills' :):):) -- just what is his frame of mind concerning the current contest anyway??:):) Tick got it right with his comment I believe:):) Hey Les, is that you above hovering and listening?:) All spring and chicken jokes aside, framing is good for me:) Count me in--as in count your chickens before they hatch.......oh never mind:):)

I give up!!! I vote on none of the above. Its not easy creating fractals as it is without it being a certain type. You just start with something and it ends up something!!! So there!...lol
But ... but ... but, 'framing' is possible with fractals.
(*points above to example*)
Let alone the fact that Grand Julians practically define the term. And then there's ...
... ...
You..can..do..it.
Besides, the contest has only just begun. Got lots of time. I have faith in your creativity, Joanie. :o)
Annnnd ... as mentioned some variations work quite well in this regard. I'll leave discovering which of the actual variations as an exercise for the fractologists. ;o)
I must say, though ... kind of surprised that 'framing' won out. Who'da thunk it?

I'm hoping for a new poll soon. I'd like to see Patterns of Nature be given a try. I've seen such beautiful patterns made by the rain, the wind, beach grasses and many more. I hope others might agree on this. It's a bit different. Thx. Verena
