I thought about injecting an opportunity for us to show a little humour, with a police style mug shot suggestion.

This means that you'd have to stage the shoot (literally) but not necessarily of yourself or a person.

True, it's not necessarily a desktop orientated theme, but a chance to experiment.

I added chocolate as an option. I believe this could be a lot of fun if you think outside the square. Chocolate could mean the food, the colour, the flavour, the effect it has on people, the addiction and other concepts, it all depends on how you interpret what it means to you or someone you know.

"Dreams" has my vote, because I feel it would be more inclusive for artists in every genre and media. I also think that "colors of nature" would invite more images that are already found in abundance on the site. "Dreams", I believe, would encourage a more creative process that nudges the artist out of their respective comfort zone.

I have not yet voted but am veering towards Colours Of Nature which gives a wide field of inspiration. I also think Chocolate is an interesting and thought provoking assignment.
Dreams - we have already had that subject some time ago but would not hurt to be repeated.

Have to say if Dreams is four years old that surely puts it past the statute of limitations for reasonable re-use? An awful lot of us were not around four years ago.

I might not vote at all at this point, I'll wait and see if my vote against colours of nature will make any difference near the cutoff date. Only half the planet is in Fall the rest of us are in some other season without so much easy to get at leaf driven drama round every corner. I guess we might end up with lots of Fall leaf photos, sunrise/sunset photos and flower photos = colours of nature. Obviously you could go for "muted colours of nature" and post a brilliantly elegant and understated image that will get drowned under a vast weight of super saturated Scurved colour drama images. (Man, I'm a grumpy bum today.) Fractal colours of nature, hmmm lots of leaf and fern shaped patterns. Hey I guess I could do a fake sunrise just using gradient/blend tools. Strictly speaking the only image that does NOT contain colours of nature is..... um, what colour does not exist in nature? So that means ANY image, including a bw (You get both in nature even if technically one is the absence of colour and the other is the mixture of colours.) will be good for this contest if "colours of nature" gets up. Which really means that colours of nature isn't actually a topic that narrows down or focuses at all, so why not just go straight to the top three images in the perm galleries and declare them the winners? (Yep, Mr grumpy, but quite rational, today.)

Well I think the challenge in the Colours of Nature subject would be to produce something unique that stands out - nature's colours are prolific, sure, but not just in landscapes, autumn leaves and sunsets. They are in water, a single rain drop, stones & rocks, birds eggs, birds feathers, minerals, gemstones, butterfly wings, rainbows, blades of grass, moss, . . . . . and of course the said autumn leaves and sunsets.

It could equally be said that Dreams as a subject does not narrow down or focus on anything specific - dreams can be anything - sometimes I even dream of chocolate! The 9 pages of entries in the previous Dreams contest showed a wide variety of imagination and talent.

Anyway, I am now considering voting for Street - can not understand why it has not had more votes - something we all have access to, every one is different, there is usually something happening in them, and I have no doubt that genres other than photography would create some wonderful street images.

Even with all the examples given, I'm afraid I have to agree...Colors of Nature, whether vibrant or muted, pretty well includes everything other than man-made items, that already shows up everyday in the New Images...I voted for Opposites Attract...it requires a little hunting/thinking, includes all genres, and is open to various interpretations...i.e. people, colors, sizes of things etc.

Matsa makes a fair point, which I've used here before, any topic can be made a challenge if the artist approaches it that way.

My vote went to street. Nothing represents a community like a street. At the same time highways hold a mythic place in the developed world - a sense of freedom and an connection to "anywhere". Empty roads and country lanes reflect country life life few other metaphors. From a crowded city street fair to a leaf covered country lane - each image imparts a unique perception to the viewer. That diversity in photographic opportunity would make a wonderful contest for anybody who has ever pointed a camera at a small town parade to snapshots on 42nd street.

I hear ya....

Yeah the artist can make a challange out of any topic...but if the topic is not really challanging the temptation is there just to go with the flow,(and that will happen). I believe a topic is in need which is edgy and challanging both from an illustrative point and a photographic point. The colour of nature as has been pointed out above is what we all seem to be doing anyway. There are so many fresher ideas listed above. Such as Dreams, Not what it looks like and even opposites attract. The topic also has to be sympathetic to all mediums not just a camera or fractal art.

I am kidding, kidding. Well, a bit.

As I think/feel/agree with armasoub's words in the post above. Much more succinct than anything I could have said. 'Cause ...

I've seen the membership get excited about past challenging topics.

Bafflement at first , then ... a chipping away at the creative core to the theme to produce some really, really fine images.

Maybe next time then.

Or ...

Maybe, just maybe ... we will be blown away...

A note on contest descriptions.

Some history and thoughts...

Contest topics were somewhat problematic, typically.

And unless *caedes has changed his thoughts on the matter, preferred to leave as much room for interpretation as possible.

So as to not unduly influence the membership's creativity. In short.

Not a bad approach, methinks, and quite efficient/economical.

With that said and taking advantage a bit of the soapbox moment, got an idea for the next contest.

If you mean snapshots, or single objects shot dead-on, and such, then I think you're not alone. But as long as images like that keep getting heaps of praise bestowed upon them by the friends of the person posting them, there'll be no end in sight.

The same could be said for fractals and computer art. I've seem some amazing images I couldn't even begin to imagine how they were created, and then along will come something that looks like a zoo animal was lent a Spirograph and a couple of crayons.

Maybe if more people would step up and point out that the emperor has no clothes, he'd finally go get dressed...or something like that.

I mean that dressing up a bad shot is not the only reason for editing. I looked through the old "Dreams" contest entries. Out of 100 entries, perhaps 10 could have come straight from the camera. I don't see much photo editing/manipulation like that anymore.
I guess I just like fantasy better than real life!
