Laetiporus sulphureus is a species of bracket fungus (fungi that grow on trees) found in Europe and North America. Its common names are crab-of-the-woods, sulphur polypore, sulphur shelf, and chicken-of-the-woods. Its fruit bodies grow as striking golden-yellow shelf-like structures on tree trunks and branches and obviously grows near lake Alpine, Ca.:):). Old fruit bodies fade to pale beige or pale grey. It can be cooked and it is said it tastes like chicken-hence one of it's names. There is TONS of info on the internet if you so choose to explore. The area here in my sample is about 30" in height and the "tables' are about 10" in depth extending away from the trunk. I'll show one more example later. I did touch it and it's quite firm but spongy and has a suede like texture/feel. It was so cool!!!!!
Nice contrasting color of this very well taken photograph of this phenomenon, Buddy!
