It worked very well without the rules. If I find a little, but really little, problem here, it is that the clouds are that yellow. But still, a great shot.
Jan, you are the only one to decide how your image looks like, so it's fully up to you to make your own artistic rules. Let's call it 'artistic freedom'. This artistic freedom brought us anyhow a wonderful image. Thanks for that. Regards, Cornelius

I thought this was going to be a shot of Girls from Norwich when I seen the title :o( The reflections are excellent, I`m not quite sure what you done but it`s maby a wee bit to blue, but that might be a personal pref as ,like always it`s well composed with all the details in there as well.
I'm not up on your lingo, so I don't know what you mean by "broads", but I'd say that in a way you have follow the rule of thirds, if you count the reeds in the water and the land as a third..but no matter. It comes across beautifully, and your interpretation suits me just fine :P
"The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place; from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web." Pablo Picasso
"Imperfection is beauty; madness is genius & it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring. And when it comes down to it, I let them think what they want. If they care enough to bother with what I do, then I'm really better than them."--Marilyn Monroe
You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being.

This is a great study, no way it would look better if framed in thirds, lets face it, sometimes nature simply is half land and half sky or half water and half sky, the subject matter determines how the "rules" apply not the other way round. :)
Great colouring, moody and dramatic. Good choice of frame as well. Loved it all.
