This was from the 2006 trip to Alcatraz; a view towards the Golden Gate Bridge from the exercise yard.
It struck me as chilling that a prisoner might linger by the door, and be tormented by the knowledge that just beyound was all that they had left behind. And now the door just hangs open, waiting for it's hinge pins to rust and fall way down the cliff. [Current contest entry]

I forgot to shut the door behind me after I escaped. LOL. I really like this, especially with the GG in the distance. Fantastic work. A Contest entry I presume.

A very good entry into the contest. I would expect many men went crazy staring out that door.

Starkly beautiful. When I've been near urban prisons I've often thought the same thing: confined amid all that bustle must be particularly frustrating for inmates (not that they should, somehow, be set free).

Not only is it interesting to see a photo from the inside of Alcatraz, but to see the Golden Gate at a distant is awesome. Very unique shot. Verena.

Definite ying yang feeling. I can't imagine living behind closed doors any more than I can imagine having that view! The contrasts on every level is striking. Great eye for an interesting photo.

Frightening to see this door. But looking at it from inside out towards the wonderful GOlden Gate bridge, gives a great feeling. It must have been difficult for the people who used to be in that prison tho. Great photo indeed. Verena

Q: Why did the blonde get so excited after she finished her jigsaw puzzle in only 6 months? A: Because on the box it said From 2-4 years. Q: How do you confuse a blonde? A: Ask her to alphabetize a bag of M&Ms. Q: Why are dumb blonde jokes so short? A: So brunettes can remember them.

Wow - I'm touched and thank you all for your support.

I didn't often get comments from Verena and as you can see, this was one of the few pictures of mine that she commented upon.

I'd like to dedicate this picture to Verena; as it was something she liked enough to leave a supportive message on and her humour still makes me smile in this time of remembrance and reflection.

A chilling capture, and definitely thought provoking! I especially like your perspective that allows one to see the door, rather than just a straight view outwards. I also find it interesting that there is no sign of a lock. Excellent work, and a Big Congrats on taking second place in the contest, John!

Hey, I just noticed your entry above... did you notice that Verena actually provided two comments here? :)
