"The Old Bridge Piers at Alexandra, Central Otago,a monument to early civil engineering in New Zealand. They are the remains of the original Alexandra Bridge, which was completed in 1882 at a cost of £16,111 ($32,222). This bridge crossed the mighty Clutha River, New Zealand's largest river by volume and second longest at 338km. The piers were constructed of schist stone quarried locally. The total height of the piers is 29.48metres with 6.8metres beneath the present water level. The first method of crossing the river was a packing case on a cable. This method was superseded by a punt, which ferried people across the river. The name Clutha is taken from Scotland's Clyde River - Clutha being Gaelic for Clyde. To the Maori people the river was Mata-au (surfaced current)." . . . Anyone who has seen it will confirm that the waters of the Clutha really are this spectacular colour :)The replacement bridge can just be seen on the right.Alexandra was named to celebrate the marriage of Princess Alexandra Caroline Mary Charlotte Louisa Julia , eldest daughter of King Christian 1X of Denmark, to Edward Prince of Wales on March 10th 1863. . . .Panasonic DMC-FZ7 . .Thank you for looking, your comments are welcome and always appreciated.

That's probably about £3,500,000 adjusted for inflation. That water almost looks glacial. Beautiful shot.

That is some different colored water. I really like the old bridge piers. They were craftsmen in the day. It's like looking through a picture frame. Very nice Lyn.

A treat for the eyes. The sharp detail defines the craftsmanship and the composition ties it nicely together. The glacial looking water adds the final touch. Nicely done.

A very interesting and appealing structure. Interesting history too. The sky must also be a wonderful color of blue here or is it something in the water that gives it that great color? Just a rhetorical question. Nicely done, Eve.

A great picture along with wonderful narrative! Superb! Thanks very much both for the pic and the amazing detailed narrative!
BTW this may be interesting to you: I've seen water that colour only in one (other) place: Dezful, a 6000-year-old city in southwestern Iran. Incidentally, a bridge and the remains of a mill are seen on the river Dez, too! Only, the bridge is much older -about 2300 years to be precise (from the Sassanid period of the Persian Empire)- and, believe it or not, still in use! It is the oldest fully functioning bridge in the world! See: http://www.aftab.ir/english/iran/sh05.php , for example.

Very interesting history and a very nice photo. Truly an unusual sight. The colour of the water is extraordinary.(I have been to Glasgow a few times up the Clyde but there the tide changes the colour of the water).

Lovely image, Eve. The color also reminds me of some rivers affected by glacial runoff. The Princess must have had a heck of a time when she had to fit her signature into the little box on the back of her credit card.

Interesting structure, I love bridges. Hard to imagine how people built things like this without modern machinery, I'm glad I live in the 21st century not the 19th!! More beautiful blue here and the grey of the stone sets it off really nicely.
