I discovered this swarm of bees clinging to the lower half of a daisy clump in the garden this afternoon. It was not there yesterday!
I am not really sure if they are bees or wasps. I think bees, can anyone confirm that?
I am not sure what to do about them. Already our two cats have each come in with one clinging to their fur and we have had more than usual inside the house. They may be searching for somewhere to build a hive but I hope it's not too close. I am scared of them swarming and stinging !! The whole mass is bigger than a large pineapple and is about 12" from the ground.

They'll be looking for a hollow tree before long..Bees are OK as long as you don't annoy them...There again these look suspiciously like African killer bees...Best get the Elephant gun out...I admire your bravery by the way....R.

definite bees! probably honey bees. i have this probably from time to time & use sevin dust, cut a old mustard bottle lid, pour powder in it(home made duster) & go out at night & dust it at about 3 feet away. one dusting will kill anything. the stuff is toxic so use caution for yourself & animals. one day the bees will be gone then i just wash away with a hose. or you can try the organic & brave way. wait til dark & tie a garbage bag around it & remove it! personally i like the first approuch myself, hate getting stung
nice picture though

Killer bees????????? Richie, you kid me ???

Bit scared about the toxic dust because of our cats, and others in the neighbourhood, but thanks for the advice.
I may try and search out a bee keeper for advice tomorrow if they are still there. I don't really want to kill bees but I don't want them where they are either :(

Lyn, I do know it's easier to deal with them at night but I would be concerned about the cats, and other neighborhood pets. I would be scared too! I think your idea to seek out professional advice would be good idea. Makes for a unique shot, but yikes! I do think their bees, and I have heard that they are in decline for whatever reason,(honeybees) I think this applies too. I hope you and the cats don't get stung!

The best thing for you to do is to call pest control (or at least ask their advice) if the bees do not go away soon Lyn. They are definitely bees. Wasps have a narrow waist. Nice capture, though :)

Holy shit ... Whatever, bees or wasps, they are, you need professional help asap. Keeping cats indoors is a must until things are sorted out and be careful to move quietly and slowly around them with caution so that they do not sting you. I was once stung in me forehead by a ONE honey bee - allergic as I am to most of things - had fever and eye swollen like a dragon for two weeks - calcium and cold compresses have been the only available means in those times [40 years ago in Czechoslovakia on summer holidays].
I agree that killing honey bees on your own might be unjustified. Get the professionals to sort it, keep animals and/or kids indoors and please keep us updated PLEASE !!!!!

When I was young on the farm I drove a tractor up to a fuel tank near a tree and the exhaust from the tractor knocked a swarm like this off and they fell mostly into my lap, didn't get stung one time. It did freak me out and I did exit said tractor stage left very quickly though. The tractor continued on a few feet till it came to rest against a barn (luckily it was stone). My dad saw it and was furious till he got closer and saw all those bees, then his anger quickly turned to hilarity since nothing was hurt except my nerves. We did call a bee keeper and he came and got them, and I would say that would be your best move as well.

Check out "swarming (honey bee)on Wikipedia - it will give you all the facts. Apparently bees rarely sting when swarming unless threatened.

Over here we're told to contact a local beekeeper and they'll come and collect the swarm.(I think you Google beekeeping societies). A wonderful opportunistic image.
