Mill dam on the Kakanui River was constructed in the 1860's to provide a source of water to power Clarks Mill. A weir was built across the river just below the intake to a water race. The water race is approximately 1 km long and passes through a rock tunnel before emerging into a race which passes under State Highway 1 and along the escapement to Clarks Mill.
The Kakanui River is notorious for flooding. There are flow meters installed along the river and this is the site of one of them.Warning bells are activated when the river reaches 50 cumecs. This is a link to a piece created by a Maheno school pupil called Hayley L in 2007 with story and pictures of the river in flood which I think is worth a read. . CLICK
