This was the only shot I managed of yesterday's butterfly with open wings and it a bit blurry - I can never hold the phone steady enough and then I did not get the whole of the wings ! I shall delete it after a few days. Some of you were surprised we have these butterflies in New Zealand. They do not migrate but many overwinter in warm places. They need temperatures to stay above 12 degrees C. If this one finds a suitable overwintering spot (they like trees with rough bark) it could live for 6 months or more.Many people plant milkweed in their gardens to attract them. I spotted another one today feasting on a pineapple sage blossom. I watched it through my kitchen window and I like to think it was the same one come back for a second visit :)
