NOTICE: THIS IMAGE IS NOT TO BE POSTED ON ANY OTHER WEBSITE. This needs to be viewed full screen! This is going to be interesting for awhile. There is a little experimentation going on here. I was looking at one of the UK photo mag publications awhile back and was struck by the many beautiful pictures taken with older cameras such as the Canon 40D and earlier. I came to the conclusion that there is something I'm missing. I keep buying new cameras as do many of you for whatever reasons. And sooner or later, I'm not completely happy with them. Sooooooo, I got out my old Canon 40D (came out in 2007)which had sat in it's box for so long (several years) it wouldn't even come to life, even with a charged battery. I Googled the problem, found the solution and got the old camera working. Then, I had to spend several hrs re-familiarizing myself with it's simple workings. I had forgotten most of it. The question to be answered was: "Can I get just as good a picture with this old camera using a good lense as I can with one of these modern day "wonders" that I own (5D Mark II and a 7D)? I went chasing sunsets and flowers with the "Canon Grandpa" in tow to find out. I'll let you be the judge over the upcoming postings. This image taken with the Canon 40D with the new Sigma 17-50mm, f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM.

Pat, I am one who recently bought a new canon, why I'm not sure, but I'm happy with it, even though they always say it mostly the lens! For me grandpa did an excellent job capturing the colors, and that sigma did a wonderful job on the focus. Faved. Tigs♥ =^..^=

Gorgeous sunset, Pat! I look forward to seeing what else you capture with your "owd Canon". Personally, I bought my fancy-cam in 2006 and haven't had a single upgrade since. You don't *always* need the biggest and the best! I appreciate your experimentation :)

e could have given you a verdict if you had taken the same scene with a new camera Pat. This image looks wonderful. The sky, the colours of the clouds and the glow look very good indeed.

P.S. I may add that a new camera need not necessarily make a better photo.

Sandi, for whatever reason, I think your images with the new camera have been better than with the other cameras. ??????
I bought the 7D because of it's 8fps for action photography. I bought the 5D Mark 2 for it's high pixel count (21) so I could do some serious cropping (the 5D is broken at the moment). I also thought that many pixels would surely make for better images. Wrong, unless your going to blow them up to huge images to tack on a wall. Makes no difference on Caedes.

I have read the Canon 40D and the Nikon D90 are about as good as it gets Owd Momma. Since then it has been marketing to sell more. I bought the Nikon 7000 after a lot of research because even D90 users said it was an improvement. I doubt I buy another camera.
As for Grandpa Canon he knows that the older he gets the better glasses help. Especially good glass.
I will invest in new glass perhaps, but not another camera.
Your shot is superb.

It's gorgeous, Pat. You hit the nail on the head. I have gotten wonderful images out of a 4 mp Kodak and a 2 mp Fuji. It is all in the lens and the photographer. If you have good glass, you can get amazing shots out of most cameras. I got the 7D for the mega pixels and the fast shutter as well. I love the camera. It is remarkably easy to use and is a definite improvement over the 40D that I had before. I understand that the T3i like Sandi's is a great camera too, but I'd put the money on the lenses. Too bad so many great Canon lenses cost so much money or I'd have them right now. I want the 17-40mm, the 15-85mm, the 24-105mm, the 100-400mm and the 135mm f2.0 and then I'll be happy for awhile. lol

What a stunning sky !

There is lots of life in owd grandpa I would say.

Cameras and lenses do their job but the brain and eyes behind the lens play a large part as well, and yours both do a splendid job.
