Also known as Prairie Gayfeather. Even before it blooms this wildflower is interesting. The buds begin to color, starting at the top and working its way down, then the flowers begin to burst into bloom, again starting from the top. It is like someone lighting a stick.

I wish I was a Glow Worm, a Glow Worm's never glum, 'cause how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?

The Blazing Star comes in a variety of types and shapes, but every one I've seen (so far) is the color purple (here in the upper Dakotas it's the Rough Blazing Star we see most often). With a field full of them it must be quite a carpet of color, Jeff. It would also be quite nice to have a cluster of them in front of, oh, say, a cabin or camping area, where you could daily observe the march of color on their stems, as your post describes. I see, also, you were able to catch a forager atop this one. I'll have to keep my eye out now, when I travel our rural areas, to see if I can spot any of this variety.
