The ship Alexander von Humboldt is a suction dredger. The tidal movements cause sediments of sand and mud to be deposited on the riverbed. These have to be removed regularly to maintain the depth of the channel. On the link you can see how this works.

Upon initially reading your title, I anticipated seeing a portrait of Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt. With a name like that, I'm certain he would be pleased to see a bottom sucking vessel named in his honor. Good one Raj. I learned something today with your link.

The dredger does important work Raj, it's just another example of the fact that mother designs are often in conflict with mankind.
A very good photograph Raj no cons to this image.

A great work ship Raj - nice photo of it at work. We have a similar situation here in the states off the Carolina coast between the mainland and the Outer Banks - we call them sand suckers and they keep that channel clear.

A Redneck would have named the ship Catfish, Raj. They are the best bottom feeders we have.
Excellent shot of the ship and I enjoyed the information. I went a step further and discovered Alexander Von Humboldt, the man, was quite the scholar and taught us much about geography.
I like posts like this that make you want to know more.

We could use the Alexander Von Humboldt in some of the back bays at the Jersey shore. There is currently a proposal in place to dredge the bay and lagoons but that project is not moving forward too quickly due to politics, etc. Raj, I do like your post and narrative. That's a great looking and colorful ship. Nice one!!!!
