Another treasure of the Kruger Park. The Swainson's Francolin has red facial skin. Size 33-38 cm - about two-thirds the size of a Guineafowl. The male is a bit larger than the female. It is all dark brown, streaked with black. It is a common species of more open country, preferring bushveld with open spaces, and farmland areas. The call is a very loud and harsh and consists of 7 or 8 crowing sounds, dropping in pitch and volume towards the end: krrwoaa, krraa, kraaa, krraa.... This species breeds in the summer months. The nest is a hollow in the ground, which is lined with dry grass. It is hidden in the grass or a thicket.

This is a great capture. It's body feathers look very rounded and remind me of an owl's for some strange reason! Never the less, very good colour, clarity and light. I like the framing too! Well done!

Real nice shot.

Just me personally, but I think the color of the frame, sorta takes away from the actual picture.

I think a Black or Darker colored frame would really make the picture "Pop". The color of this frame, while blending....sorta takes my focus away.

Said once in a comment that it's a pity that on Caedes no sounds can be heard, but reading your narrative Susan, makes me very clear how the by Francolins produced call sounds, lol.
This one is another beauty from the famous Kruger Park.
Well done.
