This young great blue heron has a regular post at the launch and piers at the mouth of the river. When the gulls start swooping and talking he pays attention. Holding his head up he follows until he finds what they are interested in. Many gulls are struggling with their newly found lunch. He swoops over and with one gulp... it's gone.

Wow E~. I thought he was going to fly off the screen. Great shot and he looks good on this new toy (monitor) of mine.

The king pin of the pier. This is an excellent closeup and the comp with the rocks and wind on the water adds to it..

He is spectacularly sharp and beautifully isolated from a similar coloured background, great camera work Elizabeth. Comp is perfect as well, he's "entering" the shot and not cramped by the edges of the image. Faved on the spot, superb animal photography.

It's a wonder they don't choke. Fantastic shot of the heron in action gulping dinner. Very nice work.

Fantastic image, Elizabeth! I love the little background narrative as well. It helps understand what's taking place. Very well done.

That's one smart bird and a tack-sharp photo. Every feather stands out and even the drops of water dripping from his lunch are glinting in the sun, clear enough to pick out at first glance. Another National Geographic moment you've given us, thanks.

Did he get fries with that? Liz, how did you shoot this, if you don't mind me asking. I would love to learn more about this kind of photography and I was curious about the settings you may have used.
