On the Abdijplein (Abbey Square) in Middelburg, Zeeland, The Netherlands one can view three large hands, each four meters (about 13 feet) high. On the square lays an alarm bell too. Only one hand and the alarm bell are depicted by me.
The hands and bell are covered with blue dolly rope: synthetic plastic threads that are attached to fishing nets to protect them when they are dragged along the seabed.
Every year, some 65,000 kilos of it ends up in the oceans, some of it washes up on the beaches.
Volunteers collect it and deliver large amounts of it to Kianoosh Gerami, an artist coming from Zierikzee, a town in Zeeland too.
Kianoosh created from this blue dolly rope material this artwork (on the occasion of the contemporary art festival 'Façade 2022'). This artwork was given the name 'Pluis' which stands for 'Fluff'.
Kianoosh Gerami says: "Pluis' is meant as a warning. Look at what we're doing to the sea. All that plastic; next time when you eat seafood like mussels and fish, it will likely contain plastic granules, so these will end up inside of us - humans. This isn't right, so we have to do something about it. I don't really want to be an activist. I'd rather be an environmentally conscious artist. We all need to wake up a little and find balance for our earth!"
